Most government leaders are well aware of the litigious environment they work in every day. City and County officials generally receive briefings from their Department heads of major case decisions where enormous judgments are ordered by Judges or Juries. When they attend their Association conferences, there is nearly always a session in which another Member or City/County Attorney presents a number of recent cases where the “deep pockets” government was required to pay some aggrieved employee or customer large sums of money for some real or imagined wrong done to them. It’s clear that many of these awards are done simply to punish the Agency or Department.
However, what many government leaders do not know is there is often a similar case brewing within their own organization at that very moment. If and when they become aware of these cases, they nearly always assign someone within the Organization to conduct an investigation and submit a report on which they believe they can make a reasoned decision on how to proceed. Often those reports give the decision maker what the investigator thinks he or she wants to hear. This is not meant to cast aspersions on the report preparer, it’s simply a mater of human nature. Just by taking a look at the cases outlined along the margins, it’s not discernable, but every one of them came about because the government leader made a bad decision based on the information available to them at the time. Many could have been resolved at a very early stage for much less than the millions awarded, and in some cases without any financial reward at all. As you can see, no one is immune to these disastrous suits and resultant payouts.
The solution to this problem is to remove any doubt about the truthfulness of the information received by the decision maker. Most high-ranking government officials did not get to the positions they hold because of their inability to make the proper decisions in matters of right and wrong or the protection of City/County assets. Once in receipt of all available information and supporting evidence, they can confer with appropriate staff members and come up with the most appropriate response. That is where Principled Investigation adds value to the process.
What I Do
I bring thirty years of experience in decision-making at the very levels described above. I have experience as a Bureau Commander with the Los Angeles Police Department, The Chief of Police in St. Petersburg, Florida, and then as an Assistant City Manager in charge of the Municipal Port and Airport. In each of these positions I was required to make the very same type of decisions as outlined in the proceeding paragraphs. Sexual Harassment, Employee Misconduct, Unfair Treatment of Employees, Unfair Labor Practices, Unauthorized use of Government Property, Workers Compensation, Workplace Injuries, and the list goes own. Unfortunately for me, I to had to rely on the information given to me and on a few occasions I made the wrong decision based on erroneous information. Fortunately, none became so egregious that they became headline news. But, it became abundantly clear there was a need for an outside independent investigation in some cases. That is the reason why I developed classes given nation wide on the need for such investigations and now offer these services through Principled Investigation.
What I Offer
I conduct impartial investigations for Government agencies that are complete, through, and timely. I present a completed case file with all interviews recorded and transcribed. Photographs are taken and presented where necessary. I confer with the ordering or appointed manager as needed and keep them fully informed of the case progress or problems. Prior to starting the investigation I require a copy of any pertinent Memorandum of Understanding, Employee Contract, or any other documentation without which the investigation might be rendered invalid or damaging. A complete review of these documents is completed prior to starting the investigation. You may never need my services, but experience tells me that if you do, I will present you with a product in which you can have complete confidence in the information given and on which you can make the most informed decision possible.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me for additional information on how I may be of service.
